Back in Canada

On Phillips Island still, we went into a koala reserve to visit these awesome little bears for the last time.  The kids cuddled with two giant specimen at the entrance of the reserve.

Toujours sur l’Ile Phillips, nous sommes allés visité une réserve de koalas afin de visiter pour la dernière fois ces magnifiques petits ours gris.  Les enfants ont se sont réfugiés dans les bras de deux spécimens géants à l’entrée de la réserve.

A little interlude to mention the terrible bull ants who live all around us over here

Une petite pause afin de mentionner les terribles bull ants qui vivent tout autour de nous ici.

And now we are on our way to the principal attraction of the Island : the little penguin parade.

Et maintenant, nous sommes en route vers l’attrait principal de l’Île : la parade des petits pinguins.

The warning panel is not a joke.

The blue of the sky never stopped to amaze me. The walk along the coast on these wooden path was simply joyful and breathtaking.

Le bleu parfait du ciel ne cesse jamais de m’ébahir.  La promenade le long de la côte sur les sentiers de bois fût simplement  remplie de joie et d’émotions.

Later in the evening, we gathered on the beach to assist to the return from a day in the ocean of the little penguins.  As it is forbidden to take pictures during the parade, we are presenting you with the photos from the advertising pamphlet.

Plus tard en soirée, nous nous sommes regroupés sur la plage afin d’assister au retour de la journée en mer des petits pinguins.  Comme il est interdit de prendre des photos durant la parade, nous nous présentons les photos du pamphlet publicitaire.

It was very cute to see them coming out of the water in little groups at a time and then following each other up the dunes to their respective den.

 C’était tout à fait mignon de les voir sortir de l’eau en petits groupes, pour ensuite se suivre à la queue leu leu sur les dunes jusqu’à leurs dens respectifs

For our last week-end, we went camping at Phillip Island. We found there some real little treasures of pleasure, entertainment and amazement. There we witnessed the little penguins parade at night, experienced strangeness in the Amaze’n things park, visited some koalas and we saw our first and only wild dangerous snake during one of our stroll.   But first, let’s see some pictures of the attraction that pleased  everyone : The Chocolate Factory.

Nous sommes allés camper sur Phillip Island pour notre fin de semaine Australienne.  Nous avons trouvé plein de petits plaisirs, activités et émerveillements.  Nous sommes allés voir la parade des plus petits pingouins au monde appelés “Little Penguins” or “Fairy Penguins”, nous avons expérimenté des phénomènes étranges au parc Amaze’n things, avons visité des Koalas et avons apperçu notre premier et seul serpents vénéneux lors d’une promenade toute innocente sur la rue. Mais d’abord, voici quelques photos de l’attraction qui a définitivement fait le bonheur de tous:  La fabrique de chocolat.

Ici, une carte du monde faite entièrement de chocolat qui nous montre avec des boutons de chocolat noir les seuls pays qui fourni les fèves de cacao nécessaires à la confection de chocolat mondiale.

Every statue and picture frames as well as the micro city was made entirely of chocolate.

Toutes les statues et “peintures ” entièrement faites de chocolat en plus d’une ville miniature avec un train électrique.

We also saw what is apparently the world’s largest chocolate waterfall.

Nous avons aussi vu en action, ce qui est apparamment la plus grande chute de chocolat au monde.

Churchill Island, just off the coast of Phillip Island holds an important place in the history of European settlement in Victoria.  The site of the first European agricultural pursuits in Victoria, the island has been farmed since the 1850’s and in 1872 was purchased by Samuel Amess, former Mayor of Melbourne.

Une promenade le long de la côte offre des vues magnifique de Phillip Island et de Western Port. La ferme restoré avec ses vieux bâtiments vous ramène dans la vie passée des premiers colons australiens et des anciennes techniques d’agriculture.

Churchill Island revêt une grande importance historique de la colonisation Européenne de Victoria.  Site de la première poursuite agriculturelle européenne à Victoria, l’isle fut cultivée depuis 1850 et fut achetée en 1872 par Samuel Amess, ancien maire de Melbourne.

That was a lot of fun and we saw a very strange kind of bird which we found out later was a Cape Barren Goose.  Very pretty kind of bird.

Ce fut un avant-midi très plaisant. Nous avons rencontré un oiseau a l’allure plutôt étrange dont nous avons appris l’identité un peu plus tard; il s’agissait d’une oie de Cape Barren.

The kids even milked a cow. Nicolas fell pretty much in love with the little calf whom he didn’t want to leave.  The only kind of snake living on Phillip Island is the copperhead snake , and we finally saw one in the wild the next day.

Les enfants ont trait une vache et Nicolas est tombé en amour avec le petit veau qu’il ne voulait plus quitter au moment du départ.  La seule espèce de serpent vivant sur l’ile est le copperhead snake que nous avons enfin rencontré sur notre chemin lors d’une ballade le lendemain. Il s’agit d’un serpent pour lequel aucun anti-venim n’existe jusqu’à présent.  Très rassurant n’est-ce pas?

At the Queen Victoria Markets, we shopped for some last souvenirs and some bigger sweaters for the trip back in Canada.  Annie wanted to ride a camel since the first time she saw them at the market and, we decided that was the right time to let her go.

Aux Queen Victoria Markets, on est allé se procurer des souvenirs de dernière minute ainsi que des gilets chauds en prévision de notre retour au pays.  Annie voulait se ballader à dos de chameau depuis la première fois qu’elle les avait apperçus aux marchés.  Nous pensons que le moment était plutôt bien choisi pour la laisser en profiter.

It is very wobbly when a camel stand up as it lift its hind legs first. You have to hold tight.

Comme les chameaux se lèvent les pattes de derrière en premier, c’est très instable et il faut bien se tenir pour le décollage.

Annie pretended to be a princess waving at her subjects.

Annie se prenait pour une princesse, saluant ses sujets sur son passage.

We needed also to visit the Royal Botanic Gardens before to leave and, while it is a free activity, why not.

Nous devions aussi visiter les Royal Botanic Gardens avant de partir et comme l’entrée est gratuite, il n’y avait pas de raison de ne pas en profiter.

As the date of our departure from the paradise island that is Australia draw closer, we felt ourselves a bit pressured to at least go and see some of the must see.  It is with regret that we haven’t had the opportunity to go visit Sydney and Brisbane, but with all the work that organizing the trip back and selling all our belongings and trying to squeeze as many working shifts at the clinic, we had to choose wisely and cost effective ( if we can say that).

We decided to visit the Old Melbourne Geol, the Botanic Garden and to go for a week-end of camping on Phillip Island to see the little Penguins and more.

Here is a medley of Pictures taken during our last days in Australia before to hit the sky once again to go back in the cold of our homeland, Canada.

Comme la date de notre départ de notre Ile paradisiaque qui est l’Australie s’approchait à grands pas, nous nous sommes retrouvés sous pression et serré dans le temps pour aller voir quelques-uns des endroits qui devaient êtres visités avant de partir.  Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas eu l’occasion d’aller visiter Sydney ou Brisbane, mais avec tout le travail qu’organiser notre retour demandait, incluant la vente de nos biens, les heures de travail extra pour nous permettre de financièrement y arriver et l’école des enfants, il fallait choisir de façon sage et économique.

Nous avons donc décider d’aller visiter la vieille Prison de Melbourne, le jardin Botanique et d’aller en camping pour la dernière fin de semaine sur Phillip Island pour aller voir les petits Pingouins et autres merveilles de l’endroit.

Voici donc un pot-pourri de photos prises durant nos derniers jours en Australie avant de nous envoler de nouveau vers le froid hivernale de notre mère patrie, le Canada.

At the Old Geol we’ve been taken into holding and thrown through the whole process of questioning, police body search(partial of course) and confinement in the holding cell.

À la vieille prison nous avons été mis en garde à vue et lancé à travers le processus de questionnement policier et la fouille partielle ainsi que le confinement dans une cellule.

The ancestor of the bullet proof vest, wore by Ned Kelly to protect himself against police bullets.

Ici, vous pouvez voir l’ancêtre du gilet pare-balle porté par Ned Kelly pour se protéger des balles de la police.

Here, Annie was convinced that she saw the mannequin in the cell moving his eyes. She was pretty freaked out.

Ici, Annie est convaincue d’avoir vu les yeux de ce mannequin bouger.  Elle en était assez perturbée.

In the jail, we learned about the life of notable criminals in Australia and the conditions of the prisoners.  Ned Kelly is the most notable criminal and he is the star of the museum jail.  A lot of souvenirs around Melbourne are to his effigy.

Notre visite de la prison nous a apprise la vie de certains criminels notoire de l’Australie et de leurs conditions d’emprisonnement.  Ned Kelly est le plus notoire criminel et il est comme la star de cette prison musée. Beaucoup d’endroits de Melbourne vendent des souvenirs à son effigie.

Annie found a great pleasure activating the hanging device on display.

Annie trouvait plutôt amusant d’activer la maquette pour pendre la petite poupée.

Nicolas is loosing his mind after a few weeks in a cell.  When you look at the food rations you can imagine why. And no computer? no video games?..

Nicolas est en train de perdre la raison après quelques semaines dans une cellule.  Quand on regarde les rations de nourriture, on peut facilement imaginer pourquoi.  Et en plus, pas d’ordinateur? pas de jeux vidéo?..

After our visit to the jail, we went for the last time to the Queen Victoria Markets and Annie rode a camel. Stay tune for our next post.

Today we went in Melbourne downtown for the last time (and without the kids) to look for some warmer clothes for Guylaine in preparation for our return to Québec.

On the way, we found a great café just beside the Victoria Market where we wanted to go since a little while. They sell all day long breakfast. (It’s not really part of Australian lifestyle to take breakfast out in restaurants.)

We ate some delicious pancakes with some REAL Canadian Maple syrup. So so good. At 12.50$ for mine and 14.50$ for Guylaine’s Banana pancake, it better be. Don’t you want to take a bite just now? Mmmmm

The day had started so good but when returning from town, I collided with another car that cut me off on my Green light.  The guy was a newly arrived asian refugee from (he did not wanted to tell me where) that did not know that the priority was to the through traffic on the green light not to anybody that feel like turning. This is my FIRST accident ever. It had to be 1 week before we leave and just when we had a buyer for the car. Good for us, the purchaser has agreed to still take our Camry for half the previously agreed price.

With the monstrous sized pancake of this morning I was supposed to take it easy on food but I needed some sweet stuff to feel a little bit better this evening and so I did indulge myself…..just a little ice cream.

As you all probably know by now, we are coming back to live in the Quebec region on April 1rst 2009.  As the maple syrup season will still be on and because we want to make our abrupt return as agreeable as possible, we would really like to go spend a day with the kids and some friends to a maple shack.  Anyone of our friends who are reading our blog, if you are interested in coming and have fun with us and celebrate, just let us know and we’ll arrange a date for the event.  It will be in the region of Quebec City and it has to be sometimes in April. Hope to see you all very soon.

Comme vous le savez sûrement tous déjà, nous revenons au pays pour vivre dans la région de la Ville de Québec le 1er avril 2009.   Comme la saison des sucres battera encore son plein et dans une tentative de rendre notre retour impromptu le plus agréable possible, nous aimerions beaucoup passer une journée avec les enfants et quelques amis dans une cabane à sucre.  Tous nos amis qui nous lisent et qui sont intéressés à venir se faire plaisir et célébrer avec nous, laissez-le nous savoir et nous arrangerons une date pour l’évènement.  Ce sera dans la région de Québec et il faut que ce soit en avril avant que la saison ne finisse. Au plaisir de se voir bientôt.

Today I came across a caricature in the local newspaper. It’s a burned koala and a bird sharing a hospital room after some of the many disasters to hit Australia recently.

So let’s list them:

The tornado in South Australia…

… the horrible bushfires in Victoria (not so far from us) and yes it smelled fires some days with the wind blowing in our direction…

… current major oil spill in Queensland not too far from Brisbane…

… incredible flood north east of Australia…

and after some of the warmest weather on earth a few weeks ago, today, here in Werribee, hail was falling from the sky.

It is time to evacuate Australia !!!

Ok its not why we are moving away from “paradise” but maybe we can return to Canada as refugees and get lots of money from the government???

We are now “playing Tetris” with our luggage. Way too much stuff to keep, not enough space. (Good for us that eBay expose us to way more buyers here than in Perth)

Annie, always happy,  found a new temporary bed, just under my desk.

I think she is planning on working for Google.

Last day I was alone with the kids and I seen the attic door open. That was strange. I don’t see why the kids would have open this or how. Right away pictures in my mind of the movie “The Grudge” formed. Is there an angry ghost in the house!. The kids swore to me that they did not open the trap.

But fear not. Yesterday, while taking a walk in town we crossed some help…

Scooby-doo and friends will find out who is pretending to be a ghost.

Now we can relax. … no but seriously, the kids are still firm on this… they did not open the attic door…yeah, sure!

Yes we are going back in Canada. But not anywhere in Canada, in Québec City.

Oui nous retournons au Canada. Et pas n’importe où, dans la ville de Québec.

Some of our friends just don’t get why we are leaving paradise for the Ice Kingdom. Well it happens that I could not find work as a senior software developer in Melbourne in 6 months and I found something in Québec city in just 2 weeks. We think (and may be wrong) that in time of economic crisis the Australian cubicle people are becoming a bit more patriotic in the hiring process.

Beaucoup de nos amis ne comprennent pas pourquoi nous quittons ce “paradis terrestre” pour le royaume des glaces. Et bien, il se trouve que ne n’ai pas trouvé d’emploi en 6mois comme développeur de logiciel sénior ici alors qu’il ne m’a fallu que 2 semaines pour me faire embaucher à Québec. Nous pensons (Et pouvons nous tromper) qu’ en ce temps de crise économique, les Australiens de cubicules deviennent assez patriotiques dans le processus d’embauche.

Anyway, last time I was in Québec city it was in 1995. I suppose it changed a lot since then. But it is a very beautiful city and we will be back in a French environment, after 10 years of leaving the province of Québec.

En tout cas, la dernière fois que j’étais à Québec c’était en 1995 et j’imagine que ça a bien changé. Québec est une très belle ville et  retourner dans un environnement francophone après 10 ans sera bien agréable.

Annie, our little English Canadian girl, is a little bit scared. But we are mostly worried that our kids loose the english speaking gift they have. Nicolas is just calm, ready to deal with any new situation that will come along.

Annie, notre petite Canadienne Anglaise, est un peut effrayée. Mais nous sommes plus inquiets que nos enfants perdent leur anglais. Nicolas, lui, est très calme et est prêt à affronter toute situation qui l’attend.

So, end of March, we will be taking the plane to Vancouver, then picking up our Dog, Vader. We will travel from Vancouver to Québec City by Train. It should be cool to go though our Country of origin and finally see the Rockies.

Ainsi, à la fin mars, nous allons prendre l’avion pour Vancouver, où nous ramasserons notre chien Vader. Ensuite nous allons prendre le train de Vancouver jusqu’à Québec. Nous sommes tous excités à l’idée de traverser pour la première fois notre pays d’origine et enfin voir les Rocheuses.

I was at the gym today and I saw this fond raising BBQ organized by the Basketball Association to help the victims of the Bush Fires. No but a BBQ to help the Bush Fire victims!!! is this creepy or what?

J’étais au gym aujourd’hui et j’ai vu cette enseigne. L’association de Basketball organise un BBQ pour aider les victimes des Feux de brousses. Non mais un BBQ pour aider les victimes des feux terrifiants des dernières semaines c’est vraiment  creepy.
